Note: These are the best computer representations of product colors, the existing concrete conditions greatly influence the final color of stains and finishes. For best results, always obtain a sample, test a small area and let product to dry to ensure color satisfaction before making your final color selection. Wet stain looks very different from dry stain.
Product Data Guide & MSDS
Mason's Select Transparent Concrete Stain meets all current regulations for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
READ ALL DIRECTIONS AND
PRECAUTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING.
SURFACE PREPARATION:The success of a coating for concrete
is always dependent on the proper surface preparation of the concrete. The following steps will help you reach
maximum results and longevity.
ALWAYS START WITH A CLEAN AND
DRY SURFACE: Concrete surfaces must be free of dirt, wax, grease, oil and other contaminants. Clean grease and oil with
Mason's Select Concrete Cleaner and rinse thoroughly.New concrete must cure for at least 30 days
prior to application.New or old,
concrete must be dry prior to application. To test for moisture tape a 18"x18"
polyethylene sheet approximately 4 mils thick over the concrete.Leave in place for 16 hours. If there is no moisture accumulated on the
sheet you may proceed, if there is moisture then allow concrete to dry for
several days and retest.
ALWAYS START WITH A ROUGH SURFACE: Use Mason's Select Safe Solution for etching (or
roughening) concrete.Safe Solution is
non-corrosive, biodegradable, and easy to use.It will roughen smooth concrete and prepare the surface for staining. Simply apply Safe Solution, let it work for approximately
30 minutes, scrub and hose with water. After etching is completed, surface must
be neutralized using Concrete Cleaner.Follow Concrete Cleaner instructions for neutralizing concrete surfaces.Because stains must penetrate to adhere,
avoid surfaces that have been previously coated, have been treated with a
release or curing agent (e.g., "tilt-up" structures), or other
contaminants.Test bare concrete surface
for absorption by sprinkling with water. Bare concrete surfaces that are especially
smooth, non-porous or do not readily absorb water must be etched.Etching smooth concrete will allow coatings
to penetrate and adhere to the concrete. Coatings can peel or be rapidly worn away from
smooth concrete. It is imperative to the
performance of coatings that the surface be coarse enough to allow penetration
and adhesion.Concrete surfaces must be
rough to the touch or have a texture as rough as 120 grit sandpaper.Concrete may be etched (roughened/profiled)
using Safe Solution or a floor grinder or shot blaster.
Profiling
or Etching the concrete prior to staining is highly recommended for maximumproduct performance.
PRODUCT PREPARATION: Stir
thoroughly from bottom to top of container and occasionally during
application.DO NOT SHAKE.Shaking will create excessive air in
product. If shaken, allow air to escape
product before application.
THINNING:Add 1 quart of water to 1 gallon of product
and stir thoroughly.Thinning is
necessary to achieve proper penetration and appearance.
TEST AREA: Always
apply product to a small test area and allow to dry completely before staining
entire project to ensure desired color and appearance.NOTE: Color of wet stain is much different
from color when dry.
APPLICATION: Different
concrete types, textures and natural colors will affect finished tone.Cover all plants, grass, vegetation, or
nearby areas not to be stained.Keep
container tightly closed when not in use.Apply product when the temperature is above 50ºF. and below 90ºF.Do not apply in extreme heat of day or in
direct hot sunlight. Concrete must be
cool enough to allow full product penetration.Do not apply if rain is likely to occur within 24 hours.
APPLICATION METHOD: For best
results apply first coat using a pump-up or airless type sprayer.NOTE: Attempting to apply the first coat
solely with a brush, roller, or pad applicator may result in lap lines since
the concrete may absorb the first coat faster than a brush, roller, or pad can
supply wet stain. When spraying, adjust
nozzle to the widest possible spray pattern.Spray stain with a broad sweeping motion until it begins to "wet up"
(get wet) on the surface.Note that the
color may not be apparent at this point, but will appear as the product
dries.Do not over apply or soak
concrete. Do not allow product to pool or puddle on the surface. One lightly sprayed coat is all that is
necessary using this application method. If desired, a second coat may be applied after
the first coat has dried for 4 hours.A
second coat will result in a darker tone than the first coat and offer added
protection.A second coat should be
applied as a thin coat since the first coat has already sealed the
concrete. The second coat can be applied
by brush, roller, pad applicator or pump-up sprayer. If using a pump-up or airless type sprayer,
the second coat must be spread out to a smooth, even finish using a brush,
roller, or pad applicator.
COVERAGE: 150-250
sq. ft. per gallon depending on porosity of surface. If a second coat is desired, spread rate of
the second coat will be approximately 250-350 sq. ft. per gallon.
DRY TIME: 1 hour
to touch, 4 hours to re-coat. Allow 24
hours for foot traffic and 72 hours for vehicles/furniture.Dry time can be affected by temperature and
humidity.
FAQs
Q: Why does the product look different in the container than on the website or brochure?
A: As Transparent Concrete Stain penetrates and binds with the concrete, it will change color. The liquid in the can and a wet test area are not representative of the dried product. Always allow test areas to fully dry (4 hours), then check color before staining the entire job.
Q: Since the full color doesn't show up until the stain is dry, how do I know if I'm putting enough product on while I'm spraying it?
A: There's no real risk in applying the first coat too lightly, because it is very easy to apply a second coat if the first coat dries lighter than anticipated. Apply the first coat just until the concrete begins to get wet and watch how the color appears as the stain dries. Always test a small area first and allow it to fully dry to test for color satisfaction.
Q: Can Transparent Concrete Stain be used on interior concrete?
A: Yes, Transparent Concrete Stain can be used on any type of porous concrete surface. Many interior floors have used a sealant or release agent, so be sure to test the surface for water absorption. If concrete is too smooth or does not readily absorb water, it may need to be etched. (Click here for instructions on how to test for moisture.) To etch smooth concrete, simply use Mason's Select Safe Solution to roughen the surface. Safe Solution is a non-corrosive and biodegradable formula that is specifically designed to prepare concrete for paints and stains.
Q: If I etch the concrete, do I have to neutralize the concrete before staining?
A: Yes, the etching process creates a residue that must be completely removed prior to staining. Any residue that is left on the concrete can cause the coating to fail. Use Mason's Select Concrete Cleaner to remove tough grease and oil spots prior to etching and as a neutralizer after etching. For maximum results and longevity, read and follow all surface preparation directions on the product labels.
