Mason's Select Transparent Concrete Stain

Faux Finishing Techniques-Blending & Sponging

Spraying wet stain on wet stain, blending creates a marble look that  unifies and alters the color of stained or damaged concrete, giving it new life and a finished look.  When blending colors, ordinary concrete becomes extraordinary. Just choose two or three shades for great results!

Blending Technique:
  1. Prepare concrete surface according to label directions.  Following all label application directions, spray base coat color on clean, bare concrete surface.
  2. Stain only manageable sized areas (e.g. split area into quadrants) to allow time and provide uncoated areas to walk on while applying second coat while base coat is wet.
  3. While base coat stain is still wet, apply second color, or use Coal Black &/or Quartz White for blended accents.  Using a pump-up or airless sprayer, quickly spray second color over the base coat using a circular motion to create a "cloud-like" blended effect.  Spray lightly to avoid puddling of color.
  4. If using a third color, apply while first and second color coats are still wet.
  5. For added protection:  After stain has dried for at least 4 hours apply Mason's Select Clear Concrete Sealer in Satin for a matte finish or Gloss for a "wet look" finish.  Clear sealers will not yellow, crack or peel and will provide added protection against UV rays, hot tire pick-up and automotive fluids.

Sponging Technique:

Almost any type of household sponge can be used for creating patterns and blending colors. Be creative with items you already own such as kitchen and car sponges. Cut square sponges into specific shapes, or use a sea sponge for a textured look. Specialty sponges and textured sponge rollers can be purchased at paint and decorating stores in a variety of shapes and textures. For a blended effect use wet on wet stain. For crisper shapes, or to keep colors from mixing together, use wet on dry stain

1) Following all label directions, spray base coat color on clean, bare concrete surface. Stain entire area. Or, sponge stain onto bare concrete if a mottled look is desired (see examples above).

2) If using wet on wet stain, dip sponge or sponge roller into accent colors and apply to wet stain. As the colors mix together it will become more blended.

3) If using wet on dry stain, let base coat dry for at least 4 hours, then apply accent colors with a sponge or sponge roller.
